La rivista, nata nel 1974, è pubblicata sotto la direzione scientifica di docenti di discipline linguistiche delle Università di Trieste e di Udine. Fin dall'inizio si è caratterizzata per l'ampio ventaglio di interessi (dall'indoeuropeistica alla linguistica africana, dal contatto tra lingue alle questioni di taglio più teorico), dimostrandosi sempre aperta alla collaborazione di studiosi, italiani e stranieri, di varie tendenze. Una particolare nota di vivacità è conferita dai dibattiti su temi particolari, cui vengono invitati i più noti specialisti. Ogni volume contiene anche un nutrito numero di schede bibliografiche.

The journal, founded in 1974, is published under the scientific committee of teachers of Linguistic from the Universities of Udine and Trieste. Since its beginning, the journal has been dealing with a wide range of interests from Indo-European studies to African linguistics, from language contacts to purely theoretical questions and it has always welcomed collaborations with Italian and foreign scholars with competence in different fields. A peculiar characteristic of the publication is conferred by discussions commissioned on specific themes to which the most outstanding specialists are invited to contribute. A great number of books are also reviewed on the journal.
