Pochi paesi nel Mediterraneo conservano un patrimonio archeologico così vario e importante come quello esistente in Libia, che infatti va dalle più antiche presenze dell'uomo, nel deserto del Sahara, fino alle vestigia di epoca punica, greca e soprattutto romana della zona settentrionale e marittima, in Tripolitania e Cirenaica. Numerose sono state nel passato, e sono tuttora, le missioni archeologiche di varie Università italiane a Cirene, Leptis Magna, Sabratha e sui siti di età protostorica; numerose anche le ricerche di archeologia subacquea. La rivista «Lybia Antiqua», apparsa per la prima volta nel 1964 a cura del Dipartimento di archeologia della Libia e poi sospesa per lungo tempo, si propone di raccogliere e pubblicare i risultati di queste ricerche, in uno sforzo congiunto di studio e di valorizzazione del grande patrimonio archeologico e storico di questa regione.

Few countries in the Mediterranean area retain an archaeological heritage so varied and important as that which exists in Libya: in fact, the ancient remains begin from the earliest human presences in the Sahara desert and arrive at the ruins of punic, greek and especially roman age of the northern and maritime area, in Tripolitania and Cyrenaica. In the past, and still today, there were a lot of archaeological missions of various italian University in Cyrene, Leptis Magna, Sabratha and in the sites of protohistoric age; also the researches of underwater archaeology are numerouses. The journal «Libya Antiqua», appeared for the first time in 1964 by the Department of Archaeology of Libya and then interrupted for a long time, aims to collect and publish the results of these researches, in a joint effort of study and exploitation of the great archaeological and historical heritage of this country.
